I am a painter living in the city of Victoria, on Vancouver Island on Canada's Pacific coast. I paint people, landscapes, seascapes, florals, and still lifes. These different subjects are interesting in different ways, but what they have in common is the wonderful interplay of light and shadow, shapes, colors, and edges. The combinations and the possibilities are endless.

I began painting in 2005 after a career in scientific publishing. Even if you don't leave it so late, making art is the study of a lifetime. There is always more to learn; you never "get there". I learn by drawing and painting from life as often as possible, by visiting galleries here in Victoria and while traveling, and by learning from the many accomplished artists right here in Victoria. I find the best way to improve my drawing or painting is simply to do it – put in hours.

My interest in traditional painting and drawing has taken me to Florence, Rome, Paris, the UK, and to Santa Fe New Mexico where I was fortunate enough to attend workshops with painters Henry Wingate and David Leffel. My approach to painting and drawing is partly the result of my time at the Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding in Port Hadlock, Washington, where the focus is on careful craftsmanship, and "skillful work joyfully executed".
